The Versatility of the Crochet Rose

The crochet rose has been used as an embellishment since before the turn of the 20th century. And what a darling and simple embellishment it can be. With just a bit of scrap yarn, you can make any ordinary project look fabulous and cottage core or even give it a vintage flair.

The crochet rose was even taught to children back in the 1920s. In The Mary Francis Knitting and Crochet Book by Jane Eayre Fryer, one of a series of books using imaginary characters to teach children domestic projects, it’s one of the many projects taught as an embellishment for doll clothes.

Here are some other ways you can use the crochet rose to add something special to your projects or clothes. But really, you can add them anywhere you feel needs a little floral charm!

~ Decorate the collar of a sweater. With a couple stitches, you can put 1-3 roses on your sweater collar to add a sweet vintage look.

~ Make a broach or barrette. Simply stitch the rose to a hair clip or a pin back (you can use another pin smaller than the rose in a pinch) and you have a pretty accessory for any occasion.

~ Add to the brim of a hat. Flowers on a hat is a given! And you can make your own floral hat by stitching roses to a beanie or making a chain to fit around a sun hat.

~ Make a charming bookmark. Attach a rose to a crocheted chain to mark the pages of your current read.

~ Decorate a gift. Need a pretty gift decoration? Add a flower and length of yarn instead of a bow!
